چکیده

The question of what impact mergers and acquisitions have on key equilibrium performance measures is fundamental to our understanding of competitive dynamics in an oligopolistic industry. We address these questions in the context of price competition models with differentiated goods and asymmetric firms allowing for general non-linear demand and cost functions merely assuming that both the preand post-merger competition games are supermodular along with two minor technical conditions. We show that, in the absence of cost synergies, post-merger equilibrium prices exceed their pre-merger levels. Moreover, the post-merger equilibrium profit of the merged firms exceeds the aggregate of the pre-merger equilibrium profits of the merging firms. The equilibrium profit of the non-merging firms increases as well. We establish our results, at first, for settings where each firm in the industry offers a single product; we then generalize them to industries with multi-product firms. We also derive conditions under which cost synergies, by themselves, result in lower equilibrium prices than otherwise obvserve post-merger, and discuss how the combined effect of increased market concentration and cost synergies can be assessed efficiently.

Horizontal mergers with free entry

We consider the impact of horizontal mergers in the presence of free entry and exit. In contrast to much of the previous literature on horizontal mergers, our model yields predictions that seem intuitively reasonable: with only moderate cost synergies mergers of a small number of industry participants are beneficial (even under quantity competition), there is no “free rider problem” in that ins...

What drives mergers and acquisitions waves in developing countries? Evidences from Iranian banking industry

M any Middle-East countries, like Iran, have dynamic banking industries and have observed merger and acquisitions (M&A) waves. M&A waves are usually defined in the developed world context and some of their main drivers were identified as: market timing, environment's shocks, merger manias, government regulation and regulatory, and technological changes. It has been discussed that merger waves ...

Entry Deterrence by Non-Horizontal Merger

We study when and how pure non-horizontal mergers, whether cross-product or vertical, can deter new entry. Organizational mergers implicitly commit firms to more aggressive price competition. Because heightened competition deters entry, mergers can occur in equilibrium even when, absent entry considerations, they do not. We show that, in order to prevent a flood of entrants, mergers arise even ...
